Program Overview

This course is open to the general public and is for anyone and everyone!

Have you tried everything to relieve your muscle pain and restore freedom of movement? Do you believe this is age-related or that you just need to learn to live with it?  Come learn how to achieve long term pain relief and improve muscle function - on your own - whenever and wherever you need it.  Use your brain to “re-program” your muscles to lengthen and relax as you regain muscle sensation and control. The result is more fluid, efficient movement, improved breathing, drastic reduction of functional muscle pain and improved somatic awareness.

“The Myth of Aging” is what Thomas Hanna (creator of Hanna Somatic Education) called the commonly held belief that limited movement, disability, and decrepitude is the inevitable result of aging. In reality, it is the way in which we unconsciously adapt to the stresses of our lives – the accidents, injuries, surgeries, emotional and psychological stresses – that determines whether we will become “creaky and old” or maintain our physical freedom and independence. Once we lose our ability to sense ourselves we change our movements, our thinking, and our ability to adapt well to stress.

This informative and experiential course is open to the general public for their own personal learning and exploration. It has also been attended in the US, Europe and Canada by physical therapists, massage therapists, yoga teachers, Pilates instructors and athletic trainers looking for the "missing link" in movement education and health care.

This two-day immersion course is a comprehensive introduction to the core principles of Hanna Somatics: the science, philosophy, techniques, and Somatic Exercises. It is an excellent introduction to this highly effective, yet simple method of neuromuscular movement education and pain relief; it is open to the general public whether you are new to Hanna Somatics or seeking to deepen your understanding of Somatic Exercises and principles for your own personal development. It is also appropriate for those in the movement or bodywork field: fitness trainers, physical therapists, massage therapists, or anyone seeking to learn how to incorporate Somatic principles into their primary practice - or their life!

In this 16 hour course you will learn:

  • Basic somatic philosophy, a brief history of Somatic Education, and basic neurophysiology as it applies to Hanna Somatics.

  • The difference between Hanna Somatic (Clinical Somatic) Education and other methods of pain-relief and movement education.

  • What “Sensory Motor Amnesia” is, how it occurs in the brain and central nervous system, and why it is the cause of most chronic muscular pain and movement limitation.

  • How all humans respond reflexively to stress within three full body reflexes (Green Light, Red Light, and Trauma Reflex).

  • How to recognize and assess the three somatic reflex patterns in yourself and others.

  • The difference between stretching and “pandiculation,” the technique used to restore voluntary sensory and motor control of muscles.Introductory discussion about how to apply the principles and concepts of Hanna Somatics to your life: walking, standing and sitting.

  • A basic routine of Somatic Exercises that, when done regularly, will result in renewed muscle control and awareness.

This seminar includes experiential, didactic, and hands-on learning.  You will be led through 3-4 hours of Somatic Exercises in order to explore your own movement areas of Sensory Motor Amnesia - in order to understand others we must begin with ourselves. You will learn a basic routine of Somatic Exercises that can be done daily in order to restore muscle function and somatic awareness.  We will also have the opportunity to practice the technique of pandiculation in pairs to establish a better understanding of how this technique affects sensory and motor function.

Participants will receive the Pain Relief Through Movement download or audio CD and all appropriate classroom materials. Bring paper and pen, water, and a yoga mat. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to move in, as you will be doing several hours of somatic movement exploration in addition to discussion, lecture, and partner practice.

People Are Talking...

"Thank you again for letting me sit in on the seminar. It was extremely helpful to hear you deliver it again, teach the exercises and see the bodies and the sort of hands on you did to help the students find the “magic”. This kind of support for the coaches is so important.

As mentioned, I enjoy your facilitation style. You are talented at connecting to your audience with your sincere, humorous and very “human” approach.  You seem to make everyone feel valued and listened to, even with our larger group of 20."                                                                         -Trish Breithaupt

Thanks for the weekend! You have a lovely welcoming energy Theresa. If I had a word to describe the weekend it would be impressive. I am reminded and continually amazed and impressed by the power of this work.....and impressed by how everyone catches on. From the first arch/flatten to the last arch/flatten......well, it is always cool to see the rapid improvement. So positive (my other word)!"
